Wednesday morning I woke up by myself on my 25th wedding anniversary.
My husband is in the hospital for a surgery. He is fine now, but, obviously, I cannot be there with him in these crazy times. Thank God for FaceTime. Just got to see him on my phone. He was sitting up and eating a rubber chicken. Not how I pictured our Silver Anniversary! But I am ever-so-grateful. Grateful for technology to stay connected, grateful to celebrate so many loving years with my husband and biggest sobriety cheerleader.
Grateful he is alive and well and I am sober to witness it all.
I just went to a Zoom meeting where I got to see my sponsor share about how she got 40 years of sobriety! We are the same age. She got sober at 26-years-old—me at 50-years-old. We get here when we get here. It is never too late.
We are never alone—especially now.
We can go to a meeting anywhere in the world online and be with others like ourselves. This morning I woke thinking about a meeting I attended in Kauai on the beach in my first years of sobriety. How cool to jump on the Zoom call and see those people, some I recognized, 3000 miles away!
In my mind, I picture that meeting often. It’s a 7am meeting on the beach held around picnic benches. The first time I went to that meeting, I was greeted by two wonderful men who welcomed me with charming Island accents to join the meeting. They asked me to read “How It Works” in the meeting. I got to do that while watching the sunrise, hearing the crashing ocean waves, and roosters shouting in the background. That was a powerful moment when I realized I would NEVER be alone. I could go anywhere in the world and sit down in a meeting (now on Zoom!) with other alcoholics, hear their stories, hear from God and not be alone.
You are never alone.
5,861 days of sobriety today.
Grateful for every continuous day sober—what a gift.
Join us in sobriety—I guarantee you’ll enjoy the ride.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
