The phrase originated in the United States during slavery, when Africans were denied education, including learning to read. Many if not most enslaved people were kept in a state of ignorance about anything beyond their immediate circumstances which were under control of owners, the law makers and authorities. When an enslaved person learned or was taught to read, it became his duty to teach someone else, spawning the phrase "Each one teach one" (Wikipedia)
I love this.
I think when I got sober, I learned another meaning of this phrase, Each One Teach One.
It is essentially the spirit of the 12th step. “ Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”
To carry the message of how to stay sober to another suffering soul. Just like someone did for me. Yes, that is what I do now. Shine the light for others.
How?
Service—the fastest way out of my own selfish thinking is to help another in need. Reaching out that helping hand.
Now it’s your turn.
Go teach another how to do this sober life by showing them the way.
Each one, teach one.
“Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you may also be tempted.”
Galatians 6:1
